Dr. DeMarco's Treatment Philosophy
Psychotherapy is a difficult science/art to clearly articulate and describe. The process is often a complex interplay between the doctor, client, and the nature of the problem that is being addressed. Treatment approaches differ based on the needs and abilities of the client as well as on the science of the most effective treatments available to assist in the amelioration of suffering. Some treatments are more behavioral/action and practice oriented while others involve more contemplation, insight-oriented work, expressive exploration and problem-solving prior to positive behavioral outcomes.
Overall, therapy is collaborative; one in which the client and the doctor agree on the problem to be addressed, the type of treatment to be employed and the desired outcome. It is a type of treatment in which privacy, respect and a positive relationship provide the fertile ground to promote healing and wellness.
My overall approach is one that not only addresses what is referred to as "pathology", in other words, symptoms and conditions that one is seeking relief from, but it is also one that maximizes and builds on the strengths and capabilities for each person to enable him/her to develop the skills necessary to remain healthy over the life span. These strengths include: coping skills, stress resilience, emotional regulation, adaptability, grit and fortitude, vitality and agency, and positive self-esteem. I incorporate the latest research on neuroscience to assist the client in managing adverse mental states including depression and anxiety and to promote positive mental states as well. As a psychologist, I do not prescribe medication, but I can discuss referrals to appropriate professionals if medication is deemed to be an important part of your treatment. I will also work collaboratively with any professional who is already providing medication as part of your treatment plan.
